Zero Waste Whitsundays by co-founders Karen Jacobsen and Lucy Smith

Must read

LET’S celebrate plastic-free July.

It is once again July and, before we know it, we will see Christmas decorations in the shops!

Here at Zero Waste Whitsundays, we are celebrating 15 years of Plastic-Free July.

What Is PFJ?

All through the month of July, it is an opportunity to help the planet.

PlasticFreeJuly.org says it is a challenge (not a competition) intended to make us think about all the single-use plastic we use every day.

Whatever you can cut out makes a difference.

We’ve deliberately left the challenge simple, so you can choose what single-use plastics you will try to avoid and for how long.

PFJ reduces 300 million+ kilos of plastic polluting the world annually.

The 2025 plastic free pledge is focused on reducing plastic drink bottles, takeaway cups, plastic food wrap and single use bags.

What Else Can I Do?

Our top 10 ways to reduce your impact guide is a great resource. See our socials @zerowastewhitsundays. Print it and pop on the fridge.

Expanding this to your place of work is an excellent way to increase your activities this month.

Read the inspiring book: Plastic Free – The Inspiring Story of a Global Environmental Movement and Why it Matters by Rebecca Prince-Ruiz and Joanna Atherfold Finn.

Or take the plastic free pledge to avoid single use plastics.

Remember to take your coffee cup with you when you leave the house, bring reusable bags or refuse single use produce bags.

You might be surprised at how quickly this becomes a habit.

If You Only Do One Thing

Look at how your food is stored in the pantry and fridge. Switch to glass, either reuse jars or invest in glass containers.

If nothing else, starting today, decide to never again heat food in a plastic container. The toxins are crazy.
