What is Workaway?

Do you have a long list of unfinished eco projects? A compost bin you have been thinking about installing?

A veggie garden you haven’t had time for? Closets full of clothes needing to be sorted and donated?

Last year, our friend Michael told us about Italian permaculture gardeners coming to build them a vegetable garden. This was our introduction to Workaway.

Since that time, we have had a consistent flow of international travellers staying with us in our home, helping with a variety of tasks.

What Kind of Tasks?

Our German Workaway-er whipped our closets and kitchen cupboards into shape, which enabled us to declutter and streamline.

Those Italian permaculture gardeners came to us for a week, built raised garden beds and repaired our irrigation system, which has changed our world.

We have had travellers from the UK, USA and Denmark, and have loved learning about their previous and onward travels.

Cultural Exchange

To become a host on the workaway.info international website, you offer room and meals in return for 20 hours of work per week.

This design enables the Workaway-er to contribute to your home for four/five hours a day, still with the time and ability to explore the area.

Personalised references from previous hosts are available on the profiles of potential Workaway-ers, and the team personally checks each profile and provides advice.

Security is rigorously monitored, and we have had only excellent experiences. Workaway is a pathway to meeting thoughtful, conscientious travellers looking to have a local cultural exchange.

Not only does everyone learn about the world, but the menu in our home has expanded tremendously, now we have experienced baking focaccia from scratch, and a plethora of other delectable international dishes.

A Detailed Profile

We think one of the reasons our experience has been so positive is due to our detailed profile.

Being vegan, we indicate our home would be a match for someone plant-based, or willing to eat this way.

The response has been heartening. We have welcomed vegetarians and those wanting to explore veganism alike.

We choose to begin with a one-week commitment and set expectations in advance.

As avid travellers ourselves, it is spectacular for our family to have an international experience, right here at home in the Whitsundays. @zerowastewhitsundays on FB and Insta.
