DURING December, the Melbourne Grammar School Symphony Orchestra is travelling the country on a musical expedition, bringing the finest classical music to regional Australia.
Orchestra members will present a program of chamber music, at the Holy Trinity Church, Bowen, on Thursday, December 12, 2024, at 7.30pm.
In a program unique to Bowen, the church will be filled with the music of Bach, Mozart, Rachmaninov and Brahms, with all proceeds to be donated to support the work of Anglicare North Queensland.
Everyone is welcome.
Melbourne Grammar School has a proud musical history and a long tradition of orchestra tours.
The tours share the talent and passion of young musicians with a wide audience, while simultaneously providing the students with a new and invaluable perspective on the world around them.
“Providing our music students with a range of performance experiences is an important part of Melbourne Grammar’s music program,” headmaster Philiip Grutzner said.
“These tours provide the students with the experience of being a professional musician, the experience of seeing our country, and the opportunity to give back to the wider community.”
Symphony Orchestra director Pat Miller said students gained invaluable insight.
“By performing in, and for, regional communities, we hope our young musicians not only share the joy of their music making, but also gain insight into life beyond the big cities,” she said.
This year, the 75-person orchestra will travel from Far North Queensland, down the east coast of Australia, and through New South Wales, before returning home to Melbourne.
They are proud to present classical music in rural and regional Australia and, this year, performances will take place in Innisfail, Townsville, Bowen and Coolum, in Queensland; and in Armidale and Morundah, NSW.
Between performances, the musicians will visit some of the country’s incredible natural wonders and call in on many of the ‘big’ attractions along the way.
The performances will include musical masterpieces by Brahms, Berlioz and Dvorak, as well as brand new Australian works, popular orchestral favourites, and hits from the silver screen.
The performances will showcase many of the talented soloists from within the orchestra.
“The orchestra tour is one of the events I have been most looking forward to in Year 12,” 2024 Captain of Music George Pourpouras said.
“It is a great opportunity to make music with my mates, and to travel to parts of the country I might not have otherwise had the chance to see.”
All proceeds will be donated in support of local charities.
