Waste warrior shares her knowledge with school pupils

Must read

A LOCAL business is changing the way we view waste, one school at a time.

Zero Waste Solutions is partnering with Whitsunday Regional Council to deliver a waste and recycling education program in primary and secondary schools.

Sustainability consultant Lucy Smith is a ‘waste warrior’, having set up her business Zero Waste Solutions in 2023, helping individuals and businesses reduce their environmental impact and reach recognised sustainability goals.

Ms Smith, a conservation biology graduate, is also co-founder of community group Zero Waste Whitsundays, established in January 2021.

Among her many projects are sustainability consulting, workshops, preloved markets, and kids’ workshops to reduce environmental impact and educate at a grass roots level.

Ms Smith said she was very excited to be delivering the schools education program in conjunction with council.

“I am looking forward to bringing this program to the Whitsunday region,” she said.

“Our goal is to improve recycling and reduce contamination rates.

“If we all take responsibility on an individual level, we will see a vast improvement in our community”

A spokesperson for Whitsunday Regional Council said their Waste and Community Engagement teams were looking forward to working closely with Lucy.

“It’s been fantastic to see so many schools and students in our region interested in learning about sustainability,” the spokesperson said.

“Thank you to the educators who have organised our Waste and Recycling Coordinator to present at their schools, taken part in our Sustainable Sculpture Competition (which is on again this year) or been involved with our Let’s Get it Sorted video shoots.

“Lucy will be contacting schools to discuss her plans for the presentations.”

If you have any questions or wish to book the program for your school, please contact Lucy on zerowastesolutions@outlook.com or call 0421 760 895.

If you’d like to organise a presentation, please provide Lucy with some details including:

  • Audience – junior or senior
  • Group size – whole school or class
  • Preferred dates and times
  • Presentation location
  • Wifi/IT capability
  • Printing costs – will the school be able to contribute to printing the learning resources?

Whitsunday Regional Council can also provide presentations that include an overview of the region’s waste facilities and processes.

If you have any questions about WRC’s waste facilities or the ‘Let’s Get it Sorted’ program, please contact Clinton in Waste Management on wastemgmt@whitsundayrc.qld.gov.au.
